Dry Eye Symptoms

People with dry eye can experience a range of symptoms, from overly watery eyes to feeling like there’s something gritty stuck in their eye.

Common dry eye symptoms include:

  • Stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling
  • Gritty feeling
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Red eyes
  • Watery eyes
  • Blurred vision
  • Eye fatigue or tired eyes
  • Light sensitivity
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Stringy mucus in or around your eyes
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses

When dry eye is untreated, symptoms can get worse, increasing your daily discomfort. Advanced dry eye can increase the risk of infections or injury, leading to impaired vision.

Diagnosing Dry Eye

Meibography is an evaluation of the meibomian glands. These glands produce the oily layer of tears, which helps the tear film (the eye’s surface moisture layer) spread evenly and stay moist longer. The glands are tiny, tube-like connected structures inside the upper and lower eyelids. Blocked glands or poor function (known as meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) can cause evaporative dry eye. The tear film evaporates too quickly to nourish, moisten, and protect the eye’s surface.

How Meibography Works

The Meibox meibographer is a portable infrared camera mounted on a slit lamp—a microscope and light system commonly used in comprehensive eye exams. The non-contact camera can capture detailed black and white images of the external eye, including the meibomian glands.

As the meibomian glands are subcutaneous (under the skin), minor contact is necessary to gently expose the inside of the eyelids. The evaluation can be performed quickly and patients can see the results moments after.

Not All Dry Eyes Are Alike

Just like your eyes are unique, so are the causes of dry eye. Many factors can contribute to your symptoms and impact your individual experience.

However, there are 2 main types of dry eye:

  • Evaporative dry eye (poor quality tears) is the most common form. It’s caused by compromised meibomian gland function.
  • Aqueous-deficient dry eye is caused by too few tears. The lacrimal glands stop producing enough fluid to maintain the tear film.

To diagnose dry eye, healthcare professionals may use various methods such as Schirmer’s test, tear breakup time measurement, ocular surface staining, and meibomian gland evaluation. These tests help identify the underlying cause of dry eye and guide personalized treatment approaches. By understanding the differences between aqueous and evaporative dry eye, recognizing the symptoms, and undergoing appropriate diagnostic procedures, individuals can seek effective treatment options to alleviate discomfort and maintain optimal eye health.
